How it works
Add the people who should know
Each one is sent a message first, asking whether they want this. Anyone who opts out is dropped from everything after that, including an SOS.
Start a trip
Say where you’re going, and your contacts get a link that follows you until you arrive. It stops working 24 hours after.
Press SOS if something is wrong
Your live location goes to your contacts, with the nearest police station’s number for all of you to call. You get 5 seconds to cancel a press you didn’t mean.
Verified people nearby, when you ask for them.
During an SOS you can also alert verified protectors within 3 km. Your contacts can alert them for you too, unless you turn that off.

Sakhi does not call for help. It tells the people who will.
A safety product should say what it cannot do before you rely on it.
- It does not dial 112 or notify the police. An SOS goes to your contacts, with the nearest police station’s number for all of you to call.
- Protectors are volunteers, not an emergency service.
- It does not raise an alarm on its own if your phone loses signal or the battery dies. Your contacts see your last recorded position and the time it was recorded.
Why it works this way
There is no national system in India it could notify, and implying otherwise to someone in trouble would be worse than useless.
A backgrounded tab, a tunnel and a flat battery would each set off an automatic alarm, and alerts you learn to ignore are worse than no alerts. Your last recorded position, and when it was recorded, is the honest answer to where you are.
What happens to your data
What Sakhi records, and for how long- Locations while tracking
- Deleted after 30 days. The database removes them on a timer, so it does not depend on anyone remembering.
- Locations during an alert
- Kept. Those are evidence, and deleting them on a schedule would destroy exactly what someone might later need.
- Audio, only if you turn it on
- Off unless you switch it on before you start tracking. Nobody can hear it unless you raise an alert, and if tracking ends quietly it is deleted within the hour.
- The tracking link
- Stops working 24 hours after tracking ends. We store only a keyed hash of it, and search engines are told not to index it.
- The people you add

- A mock police test number
- Receives a copy of every alert, with the same link, so alerts can be checked end to end. It is labelled Police (mock) everywhere. It is not a police station, and nobody is dispatched.
